"The end of the financial year is approaching quickly and now is the time to start thinking about how to manage your money better for the next financial year," the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Financial Literacy Foundation, Paul Clitheroe, said today.

The Financial Literacy Foundation and its Understanding Money initiative was established by the Australian Government in 2005 to give all Australians the opportunity to better manage their money.

"Both the website, www.understandingmoney.gov.au, and accompanying handbook provide advice, tips, suggestions and sources of independent advice about financial literacy," Mr Clitheroe said.

More than three quarters of a million copies of the handbook have been distributed since the campaign began. And the website has attracted almost half a million visits since the launch in July last year with the budget planner, financial health check and pages on buying a home, budgeting, saving, investing and getting advice most visited by users.

In addition to the awareness-raising campaign, website and handbook, the Government has tasked the Foundation to work on a range of projects to promote the development of effective financial literacy programs and services.

For example, working with all education sectors to deliver financial literacy learning in schools (from Kindergarten to Year 10); promoting financial literacy in the workplace and adult financial literacy education; developing a database of financial literacy programs and resources; and researching consumer attitudes and behaviours.
