The Queensland Teachers' Credit Union Limited has developed the Financial Coaching Program which lends itself to integration into various disciplines in the curriculum, including Personal Development, Business and Management Studies, Wealth Creation, Economics, English and English Communication Studies and Mathematics.
The Financial Coaching Program is aimed at teaching students the importance of financial literacy. Specific goals involve teaching students the value of saving from a young age, setting goals and being fully informed about financial matters. The program teaches teenagers aged between 15 and 17 the basics of good money management. It is a free, non-branded program designed to help young people make good decisions that will benefit them in the future.
Topics include saving, spending wisely, curbing credit card and mobile phone debt, and buying a car. The interactive presentation is approximately 50 minutes long and is accompanied with an impressive PowerPoint presentation. Since March 2005, the program has been presented to over 100 schools throughout Queensland involving over 10,000 students.
Taking the program directly into schools provides teachers with a launching pad to continue further development on financial literacy topics relevant to their students. Teachers can also plan their curriculum around the Financial Coaching Program, and the presentation then becomes part of the curriculum and enhances student learning.
The Financial Coaching Program has been well received by both students and teachers, and it is anticipated that the program will continue to be offered in many areas throughout Queensland in 2007 and beyond.
