Orara High School on the NSW North Coast has been an advocate of
The Real Game and implemented the program with various Year 7 groups with varied learning needs. The school integrated the delivery of
The Real Game with a structured professional development process focusing on the Quality Teaching (QT) model and developed
The Real Quality Teaching Game. Additional professional development activities complemented the delivery of The Real Game: these included workshops on the QT model; regular teaching team meetings; and mapping the outcomes of The Real Game to the QT elements. Piloted in 2005, this project has been documented on film to produce a DVD resource which will be released this year. The resource provides information on the project and also includes real time lesson extracts which can be used as professional development tools to code against the QT elements.
The Real Game is a cross curriculum program that assists students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to make well informed decisions about their career and transition pathways. Students role play allocated occupations, learn to budget with confirmed incomes, pay tax, plan holidays, balance work and leisure time, discover transferable skills, understand their role in the community and much more as they prepare for their future lives. The 30 hour program provides significance to students between learning in the classroom and its relevance to their future. The sessions and units of the game have been mapped against the objectives and outcomes of the Years 7 10 NSW Board of Studies Commerce, English, Maths and PDHPE syllabuses to show how the program can address course delivery needs across a range of key learning areas. If you want further information on this project, you can contact Mr Kim Harland on (02) 6652 1077 or via email kim.harland@education.nsw.gov.au.
